Besides offering amazing photography through print and downloadable format, Daylight Magazine has some very nice multimedia projects from talented story tellers on their site. I like "Off the Grid" by Keliy Anderson-Staley. I look forward to seeing new multimedia projects as well photographic features and collaboratives from Daylight Mag.

Stuart Pilkington has his newest project off the ground and running. The 50 States Project is:

"The 50 States Project has brought together 50 photographers from across the USA.

Each photographer lives in one of the 50 States and during the year long project each photographer will represent the State where they live. Every two months each photographer will be sent an assignment by e-mail, they then have two months to produce one image in response. The images must represent both their style and the State in which they live."

The first assignment "people" seems to have been a success. This should be a great project and I encourage all of you to follow it throughout the year.

Funding Needed

David Wright emailed me the other day to ask if I could help spread the word for him in his fund raising efforts for an upcoming trip.

Here is what David has to say bout the trip.

"In January 2009 I leave Maine for Alebtong, Uganda, where I will spend
two months volunteering and photographing for A River Blue, a non-profit arts empowerment project for the children of internally-displaced persons in Northern Uganda. I will be using my large format camera to photograph the people and landscape for a traveling exhibition and book that will be used raise funds for A River Blue and be announced in the spring/summer of 2009."

A chance to support a great photographer with a meaningful project. A beautiful print of your choice in exchange for your donation. Take your pick here.

Multimedia

I've been busy. I'm nearly finished moving, and the new job is going well. On the Coeur d'alene Press website today is my first multimedia effort. This is actually something that Jerome and I will be working on each week. This is the first time I have used both the Canon XH A1 and Final Cut Pro ( with some guidance of course). This is quite a nice way of working. The beautiful stills were made by Jerome Pollos. Please leave feedback. More to come soon.

"Living Within Limits: A Collaboration With Nature"

I've been working. Hard. The show is almost here. The opening reception is March 6th at 6pm at the Human Rights Education Institute. Please come. There should be in the neighborhood of 35 prints in the exhibit. I want to share just a few more images to get your visuals feeling good.

Knees Are Weird

I received an email from Ian asking me to help spread the word on on a project he's working on called Knees Are Weird. In making this call for entries he hopes to "...get a large variety of unexpected work, using the mundane and slightly irreverent subject of knees as a launching point."

"Why knees?

They are an under-represented body part. I'm extremely self conscious about my knees, and I don't know why. In specific, I posted an image of my knees to a self portrait community, and was asked to censor it, because it was somehow offensive. This amazed me, because my knees are awkward, but it never occurred to me that they might be offensive. There is something about knees, and hopefully, by putting this together, we can figure out a little more about them."

Get take your trousers off and make some photographs (or other form of artwork) about the knees.

A Preview

On March 6th these photos with hang with many others on exhibit at the Human Rights Education Institute. They are part of a collection of images documenting the making of various installations made in nature, from nature, for nature. The project is in conjunction with the Nature Conservancy and the aim is to bring awareness to the environment and conservation, naturally.

From The Woods

Two images from the project I recently posted about. I am not sure about the first image, but I think the second may make the show.

I'm currently working on a documentary style project about two collaborative artists that are working with nature, making art in nature much in the spirit of Andy Goldsworthy. The project is being done for The Human Rights Education Institute and in connection with The Nature Conservancy. This project is demanding as a photographer. I am the only photographer on site. No assistants. 12 hour days, lugging heavy Pentax 67 gear (among other gear)around in waste deep snow at times, which, by the way, is now turning to slush. It's hard work, it's what we do. The projects are going well so far, but it takes a whole day to complete the larger scale projects, like today. Like the rest of the project so far, I assisted in gathering materials, logistics, and construction. Today I documented and assisted in the making of a 6-7 foot handmade basket installation. It was quite and undertaking. I am not a major contributor to the art directly, but what I do help with is quite rewarding. My job is to make not only photographs, but also a time lapse-based video project that, in conjunction with one another, will make an exhibit. This is especially demanding on me because the art will be absorbed by nature and that means that the documentation that I provide will be the only record of the project after the fact. The exhibit will show in the early part of March. More of this project will come at that time. Until then, I leave you with this:

This morning was early. 6:10 AM: I arrived at the site a little early
and groggy. It was still quite dark. While I waited for the others to arrive I took the time to make this photograph. A bit departed in style from the rest of how I've been working, but a nice first photo of the day.

New Project: Bronzed

I am currently seeking subjects for a new project that involves the preservation of personal items. I need items that have been bronzed. When I was a kid it was a popular thing to do with children's shoes, but almost anything can be bronzed. Sculptures that are made from bronze are not of interest to me...thanks, but no thanks. If you or someone you know has an item that has been bronzed, send me an email: shawngustphoto[at]gmail[dot]com.

Thanks,
Shawn.
